Summer School - The protection of fundamental rights in Europe/ La protection des droits fondamentaux en Europe

The Summer School is hosted in the magnificent Rocca of Bertinoro, the ancient sit of the Bishop of the dioceses of Romagna. The castle has been completely refurbished in 2000 thanks to a joint venture between the University of Bologna and the Provincia of Forlì Cesena. The Summer School aims to provide graduates, practictioners and young researchers (Ph.D. candidates) with an in depth background of the protection of fundamental rights at European level. The general courses are about the European Convention on Human Rights, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The single modules tackle topics alike asylum and migration, EU citizenship, relationship between the CJEU and the ECHR, the margin of appreciation doctrine, constitutional transitions and religious freedom. The course is composed by 30 hours of frontal lectures from Monday to Friday 9-13 and 15-17. The teaching method encourages students to have a proactive dialogue with lecturers.
Target group and prerequisites for admission
Students should have an adequate knowledge of English and French.
Academic and language requirements, selection methods
The selection will be done on the basis of a comparative evaluation of the application forms received. In case of applications that exceed the number of places available, a pre-selective test for evaluate the candidates’ language skills may be arranged. Candidates currently enrolled on a degree course or graduated in an area related to the subject-matter of the summer school shall be given precedence. Main topics: EU and International Law (relating to the sphere of Human Rights).
Teaching and contact hours, language
The course will consist in 30 hours of lectures and/or seminars held in English and French which will take place from 09:00-13:00 hrs and 15:00-17:00 hrs each day. Such a full immersion course, will stimulate student participation whilst simultaneously ensuring the maintenance of a high level of concentration. Students are requested to arrive well prepared at the lectures; a reading list might be available before the courses under request of the professor.
For undergraduate and graduate students coming from Unibo: €150,00
For undergraduate and graduate students coming from other universities, and practitioners: €300

Accommodation and meals
Fees includes 5 nights accommodation at Ceub (www.ceub.it). Further information will be available in the confirmation letter to selected participants.

Computer rooms and in-room internet access (wi-fi).
A guided visit to the Inter-faith Museum of Bertinoro dedicated to monotheistic religions forms integral part of the course. Other local excursions can be suggested by the tutor who may also, at his discretion, organise nights out.
